Sònia Villegas (Barcelona, 1968) is a distinguished professional in the field of art and cultural management, with an extensive career at renowned institutions such as the Fundació Joan Miró and the Museu Picasso in Barcelona. With solid academic training and international experience, she has led landmark projects and made significant contributions to the world of contemporary art.

From 2018 to 2023, Sònia Villegas was the General Coordinator of the Artistic Area at the Fundació Joan Miró-CEAC in Barcelona. She oversaw five major departments: Collections, Restoration, Exhibitions, Publications, and Public Programmes and Education, as well as the Foundation’s travelling exhibitions office. Prior to this, she served as Curator of Collections and Exhibitions at the same foundation for ten years and as Coordinator of the Miró Chair and the International Miró Research Group until 2017.

Before her time at the Fundació Joan Miró, she was Chief Curator at the Museu Picasso in Barcelona (until 2009), where she worked for fifteen years in charge of programming, collections, and research, as well as coordinating temporary exhibitions both nationally and internationally.

She holds a degree in Art History from the University of Barcelona (UB) and from the Université Paris IV-Sorbonne, a Master’s in Cultural Management from the University of Barcelona (UB-Fundació Bosch i Gimpera), and is currently a PhD candidate in Art History at the University of Barcelona (UB). She also holds a Higher Music Degree from the Conservatori Superior de Música del Liceu in Barcelona.

She has curated exhibitions for various institutions — notably the “Jean Dubuffet” exhibition at the Marc Domènech Gallery, which won the ACCA award in 2015 — and has been a professor of the Master’s in Cultural Institutions Management at the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (UIC) for five years. She is the author of numerous articles on art, particularly on the works of Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, and their contemporaries, published in books, exhibition catalogues, journals, and other specialised publications.

Her most recent and notable work has been the curation and general coordination of “Miró-Picasso”, an exhibition held simultaneously at the Fundació Joan Miró and the Museu Picasso in Barcelona during the autumn-winter of 2023-2024, and awarded the ACCA, GAC, and TimeOut Culture awards.

She has served as a jury member for various awards, including the Pilar Juncosa and Sotheby’s Award and Research Grant on Miró and his artistic-cultural context 2024, organised by Miró Mallorca.

She is a member of ICOM (International Council of Museums), ICEE (International Committee for Exhibition Exchange), CIMAM (International Committee for Museums and Collections of Modern Art), and IEO (International Exhibitions Organisers).
